Alcoa

W. Darryl Reed, age 77 of Alcoa, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Darryl was born on July 13, 1946 in Maryville, Tennessee. He was a graduate of Maryville High School in 1964 and enjoyed playing sports in the Eagleton and Maryville communities during his youth. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1968 at the top of his class with a Bachelors of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering, the first class offered in his field at the University. Darryl began his career immediately after graduation at Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He excelled in his field and retained a lifelong pride in his work as a leader in the Nuclear Centrifuge program and it’s contribution to our nation’s Cold War efforts. He was passionate about learning and making a contribution to his family and community. These interests led to his research and authoring of the history of the City of Alcoa for the Alcoa Centennial Celebration, and an extensive genealogical history of his family. He loved cars, carpentry, reading, and history, and he approached any project with a strong commitment to excellence. Most of all, he loved spending time with and caring for his family. Darryl is preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Lee and Pursur Cornelius Reed, and brothers L. Kenneth and Pat Reed, all of Maryville. He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee Reed of Alcoa; daughter Katherine Reed Strobel (Joshua) of Knoxville; daughter Lisa Boyd Russell (Jon) of Hinesville, GA; son Jason Boyd (Kelly) of Alcoa; son Josh Boyd (Jama) of Alcoa; grandchildren Tyler and Allie Boyd of Alcoa. He has also left behind extended family of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law DeeAnn Mendel (Isaac) of Pittsburgh, PA; Barbara Godfrey (Garry) of Alcoa, and David Cunningham (Melissa) of Knoxville, TN; family friend and mother to his daughter Katherine, Susan Patrick Meacham of Alcoa. It is impossible to list all of those whose lives have been impacted by Darryl’s kindness and giving spirit. The family would like to thank the nurses of Professional Case Management for their attentive care, and Alcoa First United Methodist Church for it’s caring support of the family during this time. Family and friends will assemble at 11:00 AM for Graveside Service and Interment Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Grandview Cemetery with Rev. Todd Chancey officiating.
