Vernon Newton Coulter

Vernon N. Coulter, age 89, a former resident of Danville, KY passed away September 9th in Maryville, Tennessee, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinsons disease. He is survived by Frances G. Coulter, his loving wife of 65 years, son Thomas L. Coulter and daughter-in-law Donna S. Coulter of Maryville, TN; grandson Thomas L. Coulter, Jr. of Maryville, TN; granddaughter LeeAnn Shelton, her husband Michael and great-grandson Caleb Shelton, all of Maryville, TN. He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie S. Coulter; mother Bessie Coulter; infant son Michael W. Coulter; sister, Elizabeth Kirkland; and sister Nancy Coffman. He was born on February 11, 1921 in Ellisburg, KY, and he graduated from Junction City High School. Mr. Coulter served with the U.S. Army Infantry for three years during WWII, primarily in the South Pacific. After working for Norfolk Southern Railroad for almost 50 years, he retired as Superintendent �" Rules and moved back to Danville from Atlanta in 1986. He was a member of Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Coulter was a Mason for over 60 years, achieving 32nd degree, most recently active with Franklin Lodge No. 28. He belonged to the Scottish Rite Consistory in Atlanta, GA, and he also belonged to the Oleika Shrine Temple in Lexington. The family is grateful for the caregivers, nurses and staff at McDowell Place of Danville and Shannondale of Maryville, for their loving care and support of Mr. Coulter. An Appreciation of Life service will be held 1:00pm Tuesday, September 14th at Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville, KY, with Dr. Tommy Valentine officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 11:00am till 1:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.
