Samuel L. Coulter, age 74 of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022.  Samuel was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church before birth until 1975, Armona Baptist Church, Bob Dalton Pastor, from 1975 until 1990 and was youth leader, church treasurer, chairman of deacons, bus driver. Alcoa First United Methodist Church from 1990 until present and was youth leader, member of Nova Sunday School class, church treasurer, President of Administrative Board, church Auditor. He was a 1969 Graduate of the University of Tennessee with a degree in accounting and he graduated with “Highest Honors.” Samuel passed the CPA Exam in 1971. He had positions with Ernst & Ernst, Ernst & Whinney, Ernst & Young where he became a partner in 1980 and was managing partner from 1983 until his retirement. Samuel bought the Knoxville practice in 1993 with Ron Justus becoming Coulter & Justus and retired in 2011. He was past president of the Knoxville Chapter of Tennessee Society of CPA’s. National Association of Accountants, Knoxville Chapter and past President that won honors for top chapter in the nation as president. He was a lifetime member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, member of the Chancellor Associates, University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Tennessee Society of CPAs. Samuel was also a member and past president of Rotary Club of Knoxville from 1979 until present, many committees including Board of Directors Salvation Army, Knoxville, Board member from 1978 until present, Board Treasurer Salvation Army, Blount County, formed local council (Board) served as Chairman from 1999 until 2019, and was a board member and board president of the Holston Conference of United Methodist Church Foundation. He contributed to many charities including, United Way, University of Tennessee, Churches, Rotary, and Salvation Army. Preceded in death by wife, Rita Duncan Coulter; parents, Edgar Coulter and Alma Law Coulter; brother-in-law, Fred Graves, Jr. Survived by wife, Susan Patricia Graves Coulter; children, Bradley Lynn Coulter, Jennifer Bliss Coulter Stapleton and wife, Amy Stapleton; grandchildren, Ben Coulter, Holly Coulter, Sam Stapleton, Ruby Stapleton; stepchildren, Tim Coulter, Susan Coulter Millsaps; step grandchildren, Justin Coulter, Mitchell Millsaps; sister and brother-in-law, Judy Coulter Shore and Johnny Shore; niece, Tracie Shore Alexander (Charles); nephew, John Shore (Carol); brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Charlene Kirkland; sister-in-law, Joyce McKee; several nieces and nephews; many friends including, Clint and Darlene Abbott, Ben Dalton, and Steve Ford. Family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 PM, Friday, June 3, 2022 at Smith Trinity Chapel.  Funeral service will be at 3:00 PM with Rev. Bob Dalton officiating. Following the service, family and friends will assemble at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery for the interment.
