Richard Hansford Spring was the kind of man who never met a stranger. Born in Baton Rouge, LA on October 2, 1948, he proudly carried the nickname “Cajun” throughout his life. He passed away in Maryville, TN on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

He was the son of Sheffield Clarke Spring and Joanna Peschier Spring Champagne.

Richard loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and faced every challenge—including his battle with cancer—with remarkable strength and determination. He never hesitated to help anyone in need and was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His greatest joy in life was being "Poppy," and he treasured every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. Family was the center of his world, and he made sure those he loved always knew how much they meant to him.

Richard's warm smile, quick wit, and genuine kindness touched everyone he met. He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed, and valued, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. His playful sense of humor and unforgettable personality brought joy to countless lives, and the memories he created will be cherished forever. There will never be another "Cajun."

He is survived by his wife, Debra Spring, son, James Spring (Richelle), daughters, Shellie Walton, Melissa Aultom (Justin) and Cierra Hanley (Chaning), grandchildren, Johnathan Spring, Austin Spring, Tyler Spring, Devin Shannon, Brenden Mackles, Olivia Spring, Harper Walton, Kyleigh Aultom, Makenzie Aultom, Kelsi Jo Aultom and Lauren Hanley, sister, Dianna Spring Marks of New Orleans, LA; He was preceded in death by his father, Sheffield Clarke Spring, mother, Joanna Peschier Spring Champagne, brother, Sheffield Clarke Spring Jr., son, Randy Spring.

A celebration of life will take place at Dotson Memorial Baptist Church, 814 Dotson Memorial Road, Maryville, TN. Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 10:00am – 12:00 p.m.
