Michael Thomas Moates, 67, of Maryville, TN, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. 

Born in Covington, Kentucky, on May 31, 1959, he spent most of his life in Harriman, TN. He was married to Catherine Herring Moates for just over 10 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Thomas Moates and Margaret “Mott” Moates of Harriman, TN. 

He was a welder by trade and traveled the world as a field technician for Senior Flexonics Pathway of Texas. He deeply enjoyed his coworkers and the many friends he made throughout the world. 

He was an avid sports lover and especially loved boxing. In his earlier years, he also found tremendous joy in coaching youth basketball and baseball. His children and grandchildren were the highlight of his life, and he had a soft and special love for animals, especially his dogs Kelly, Puddin, Peaches, Macie, and Milo. 

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Moates; his children Heather N. Moates of Knoxville and Chance A. Moates (Kelsey) of Simpsonville, S.C.; and stepdaughter Savannah Yancey (Donnie) of Thomasville, Georgia. Grandchildren: Tanae S. Moates, Warren “Man-Man” Moates, Jayla M. Blackmon, Adelaide Moates, Elliott Lavender, Taha Madany, Henlee Yancey, and Summer Kate Yancey. He also leaves behind a large family of in-laws and lifelong friends. 

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.at Smith Life and Legacy, located at 1402 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN 37803. Ph# 865-983-1000.
