Mary Ann Gustin, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at her home from a sudden illness.
Mary was born at Little Creek Hospital, Knoxville, Tennessee on June 10, 1955, to Marion and Virginia Gustin. Mary will be remembered by many for her 36 plus years as a Certified Surgical Technologist at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee and later at Baptist West Hospital of Turkey Creek. She began her work on August 18, 1975, and retired in October 2011. Mary was a devoted and hard worker. She loved working in the Operating Room, especially in Neurosurgery and Cardiovascular surgeries. Mary was instrumental in setting up and opening the new Baptist West Hospital in June 2003. Mary loved to travel and build things with her hands.
Those left to cherish her memory include her wife of 8 years, Jan Harris of Greenback, TN; brother, Marty Gustin (Robin) of Wolcottville, Indiana; nephew, Chris Gustin (Amber) and sons, Parker and Logan of Arrington, Tennessee; niece, Heather (John) Fekete and son Ryder of Glen Saint Mary, Florida; extended family Anthony Shelby (Lisa) of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Daniel Selby (Jordan) of Silverdale, Washington; Jospeh Shelby (Suneeta) of Winston Salem, North Carolina; and five very special friends Pam Grey of Lake City, Florida, Barry Myers of Knoxville, TN, Pat Cartwright, and Earlene Miller, of Knoxville, TN, and Dawn (John) Evans and children Joshua and Rachel. Mary also had two loving pets, Skeeter and Gus.
Mary attended Orange County Vocational Center, Orlando, Florida; Southern Missionary College, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Forest Lake Academy in Forrest City, Florida and Little Creek Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Visitation will be on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 3:00 pm – 4:00pm with the Celebration of Life to follow at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service in Maryville, Tennessee.
