Jo Ellen Backus, 91, of Louisville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026. Born on April 13, 1935, in Falls Mills, Virginia, Jo Ellen lived a life dedicated to her family, faith, and education. 

Jo Ellen earned her Bachelor of Education and Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee and went on to share her passion for learning as a teacher at Alcoa Schools for 18 years. Her dedication to education left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues throughout her career.

A woman of deep faith, Jo Ellen was a charter member of Partnership Christian Church. Her commitment to her church community was unwavering and reflected her values of love and service.

Jo Ellen is survived by her devoted husband of 71 years, William Backus; children: Landon (Teresa), Jeff (Dana), Jan Love, and Laura Sutton; sister, Betty McCoy; brother, Jerry Harris (Sharon); and daughter-in-law, Trish Backus. She was also a proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue through them.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Ethel Harris; son, George Backus; brother, Leo Harris; sister, Janet Blandin; and sons-in-law Steve Sutton and Mark Love.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to the Youth Group at Partnership Christian Church.

Family and friends will gather at Grandview Cemetery for a Graveside Service on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 3:00pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at Partnership Christian Church on Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 3:00pm.
