Gary Mitchell McCown

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Dr. Gary Mitchell McCown, DDS, MAGD of Knoxville, Tennessee announces his passing on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Dr. McCown, aged 77, was a dedicated dentist whose career spanned several decades, serving patients from across the United States and abroad with both skill and compassion. After years of service, he entered retirement, officially stepping back from his dental practice on July 31, 2018.

Among his many professional accolades, Dr. McCown was honored in 1997 with a Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)– the highest level of academic achievement in dentistry, and in 2012 as a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a testament to his commitment to excellence and leadership in the dental profession.

In addition to being an accomplished dentist, he was an avid outdoorsman, photographer, fly-fisherman, father and friend.

Preceded in death by: parents, Jack & Ernestine McCown.

Dr. McCown is survived by: son, Paul McCown; daughter, Allison MacLeod & husband Billy; grandchildren, Mitchell McCown, Evelyn McCown, Daniel McCown, Abigail MacLeod, and Andrew MacLeod; sister, Janie Mertz & husband Keith.

Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Smith Trinity Chapel. Celebration Banquet and Reception will follow at 12 Noon, Saturday, August 23, 2025 at The Life Event Center. All events and services are located at 1402 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN 37803.
