Fred Homer Metz, Jr.

September 8, 1921 — June 23, 2008

Fred H. Metz, Jr., age 86, originally of Fairfield, Alabama, passed away on Monday, June 23 at Asbury Place in Maryville, Tennessee. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He was the son of the late Fred H. Metz and Ruth C. Metz. He was also predeceased by sisters, Florence Long and Lucille Jones. He was a beloved husband, son, uncle, brother, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian Metz, his son Fred, and daughter-in-law Sophia, and grandsons, Eric and Ellis Metz all of Maryville; nieces, Joan (Larry) Clark and Pam (Phillip) Russell, nephew Robert Daniel, all of Birmingham and many great-nephews and nieces . Mr. Metz was a proud U.S. Army veteran of WWII and served in the Pacific theater from 1942 to 1945. He worked for U. S. Steel for over 35 years, enjoyed playing golf, coached youth baseball teams, and was an avid sports fan having followed the Alabama Crimson Tide for over 70 years. Visitation will be on Friday, June 27 from 6:00 - 8:00 at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary in Birmingham. Graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 28 at 11:00, Rev. Carl Russell officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial be made to the East Tenn. Alzheimer's Association 2200 Sutherland Ave. Suite H102 Knoxville, TN 37919.
