Ethel Herman Peterson, age 94 of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at Shannondale of Maryville.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ethel had a lifelong passion for learning and service. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from William Paterson University and dedicated over 40 years to teaching. After retiring from the classroom, she continued her love of learning and literacy by becoming a certified librarian in Pittsburgh.Her generous spirit extended well beyond her professional life. An avid volunteer and skilled craftswoman, she spent countless hours knitting sweaters, socks, baby items, and engaging in intricate needlework. She brought joy and camaraderie to many through her involvement in the Red Hat Society and bridge clubs, where her warmth and humor were always present.Later in life, she moved to Tennessee to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren—a role she cherished deeply. She was endlessly proud to be part of their lives and delighted in sharing everyday moments and milestones with them.Ethel had a fearless personality and undeniable presence. With a sharp wit and strong spirit, she brought light and laughter to every room. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and her honesty, humor, and confidence left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and laughter that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Preceded in death by her husband, Henry Peterson, and her son, Mark R. Peterson; survived by her daughter, Lynn Peterson of Maryville; grandchildren, Katherine Nicole Cohen Spieker (Devon) of Hendersonville, NC and Benjamin Henry Cohen (Chynna) of Oceanside, CA; sisters, Phyllis Specht of Austin, TX and Marion Ellentuck of New York; several nieces, nephews and other family also. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of Blount Memorial Hospice for the care that they have shown. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM at Smith Funeral Home with a private graveside service and interment at 1:00 PM.
