Obituary

Ellis Ira “Chalk” Blankenship, born August 20, 1950, of Harlan, Kentucky, passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends on March 3, 2026. A devoted father, grandfather, husband, and friend, Chalk spent most of his life in Maryville, Tennessee, where he built deep roots in the community and touched the lives of many.

Chalk was a proud husband to his wife, Cathy, and a loving father to his children, Sherri (Dewayne), Kim (John), Chris (Ashley), and Terra (Charlie). His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in watching it grow through the years.

He was a beloved grandfather to Kassidi, Kalli, Kelsi, Layla, Isla, Kayla, Tyler, Bryson, Gabby, Jamie, Amanda, Colt, and Patrick who brought him endless joy. Chalk cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and loved cheering them on in their lives and accomplishments.

One of Chalk’s greatest passions was softball. He loved both coaching and playing for the Maryville A’s and coaching at Maryville Little League where he formed lifelong friendships and left a lasting impression on many young players he mentored over the years. His love for the game and dedication to his team reflected his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.

Being outdoors was where he was the happiest, whether he was fishing under that big Fontana moon or sitting in a tree stand in Illinois. Years of adventure provided special moments with family and dear friends.

Chalk will also be remembered by countless extended family members and a multitude of friends who loved him dearly and were grateful to have shared in his life. He will be remembered for his warmth, his generosity, his care and connection to so many friends and loved ones, and his love and pride for his family. Chalk’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and with his family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. The family will receive friends, Sunday, March 8, 2026 at RIO Central Church, Maryville, 5:00-7:00 pm with the service to follow. Condolences may be shared at Smith Funeral & Cremation, Maryville, 865-983-1000, www.smithfuneralandcremation.com.
