Betty
Nash
March 28, 1936 – April 19, 2026
Grandview Cemetery Pavilion
12:00 - 1:00 pm (Eastern time)
Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Hemmings Nash, age 90, passed away at home on Sunday, April 19th, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on March 28, 1936, Betty was raised in Long Valley, New Jersey, where she spent her early years swimming and skating on the pond at her family's farm. In school, Betty was known for her sense of humor — earning the title of "class cut-up" during her senior year. She found great joy in the outdoors, especially swimming and camping, and possessed a remarkable, nearly encyclopedic knowledge of trees and birds that inspired those around her to learn more about the natural world. That same love of nature extended to her gardens, which she tended with pride and care.
Betty was also known for a lifelong fondness for a particular shade of blue — one so distinctive and beloved that it became known among family and friends simply as "Betty blue." It was just one of the many quiet ways she left her mark on the world around her.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Hemmings Emmons; her brother, John Hemmings; and her son, David Lee Nash. She is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Harry Overton Nash; her son, James Robert Nash; her daughter-in-law, Michele; and her granddaughter, Emerald. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, May 2nd at the Pavilion at Grandview (2304 Tuckaleechee Pike, Maryville, TN 37803). All are welcome. Condolences may be shared at Smith Funeral & Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000, www.SmithFuneralandCremation.com.
