After several years of declining health, David passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior. He was devoted to his wife, immensely proud of his daughters and granddaughter, and had a special love for his Rottweilers.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Gladys Costner, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Qualls.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sandy Johnson Costner; his daughters, Stephanie Costner and her fiancé, Jason Hatfield; Nikki Kurth and her husband, Chris Kurth and his cherished granddaughter, Lilli Goins; sisters, Glenda Hawkins and special friend, Larry Graves; SaraJo Qualls and niece Whitney Qualls and husband Jeff Goran, along with several other Johnson family nieces and nephews.

Until his health declined, David was a hardworking man who took great pride in everything he did. He found joy in quietly serving others, whether delivering Christmas baskets or volunteering with Meals on Wheels, where he especially cherished the friendships, he made along the way.

A charter member of Partnership Christian Church, David helped organize one of the first church car shows in Blount County. The event became an annual tradition for several years, raising funds for the church’s mission work. He was also a familiar face at local car shows, proudly displaying his beloved 1968 Camaro.

David honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1962-1964, including service in Southeast Asia, and was honorably discharged in 1964. He later enjoyed a long career with TVA, where he worked as a lineman until his retirement.

Though he sometimes appeared tough on the outside, those who knew David best knew he had a kind and generous heart. He loved deeply, gave quietly and will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and his faith.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Patty Sanders, Sandy Dunkin, the Amedisys Hospice Care Team and Tay Cole (T-Lowe Senior Home Care) for the exceptional care, compassion, friendship and support they provided David and his family during his final months.
