Carole Jean Anthony Lewis

December 3, 1940 — September 6, 2022

Maryville

Carole Jean Anthony Lewis, age 81, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022. Carole was born on December 3, 1940 in Maryville, Tennessee to Bill and Billie Anthony. Carole was born and raised in Blount County where she graduated from Everett High School and attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In 1961, she married Barney in El Paso, Texas where they began their life together.  After several moves, they returned to Maryville in 1968 to raise their three daughters Jennifer Lewis Anderson of Mount Pleasant, SC, Beth Lewis Thames of Brentwood, TN and Susan Lewis Garland of Friendsville, TN.

In 1968, Carole landed what she called her “dream job” at Delta Airlines, where she was a reservationist, until she retired in 1993. Her many hobbies included riding horses, gardening, sewing, traveling, cooking, reading, singing, and taking care of her beloved dogs, Sullivan & Franklin. While working and raising a family, Carole was also an active member of First Baptist Church of Maryville where she enjoyed singing in the choir, filing sheet music and participating in the handbell choir.

A fourth generation East Tennessean, Carole was proud of her family’s heritage. The Anthony family was one of the original settlers of Cades Cove and it was there that she developed a lifeling love of trail riding, hiking, and family picnics. Always up for telling stories, she frequently entertained family and friends with the tales of growing up surrounded by the people and the place she called home.

Among her many gifts, she enjoyed a myriad of hobbies and interests, but closest to her heart was her dedication to the Yellow Creek School in Middlesboro, KY. She tirelessly advocated for others to support the school by giving their time, energy and clothing donations; always organizing transport and supplies on a monthly basis.

Heaven received with open arms a beautiful angel, wife, mother and adored grandmother, and friend.  She will be missed by everyone that knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Bill and Billie Anthony, and brothers Ray & Glenn Anthony.

She is survived by her loving husband, Barney Lewis, three daughters, Jennifer Anderson and husband Rick, Beth Thames and husband David, Susan Garland and husband James, her six grandchildren, whom she adored and spoiled, sparing no limits; Caroline Perry Anderson-Glick, Olivia Grace Skerpon, William Phillip Garland, Marin Elizabeth Thames, Miles Henry Thames, and Madeline Lee Garland. She also leaves behind a sister, Sheila Anthony Alexander, along with her children, Nikki Alexander Wilson and Andrea Alexander Fann and Joel Alexander.
