Beverly Lynn Buchanan, age 88, a four year resident of Ginger Cove Continuing Care community in Annapolis, Maryland and previously of the Indian Landing community in Millersville, Maryland, died July 23, 2025 at Ginger Cove. Eleven years prior, Beverly suffered a debilitating stroke; however, her inherent qualities of determination, courage, and strength endured.
Beverly was born March 7, 1937 in Oxford, Mississippi to the late Robert and Lucile (Cain) Tubbs. Her early years were spent in the Oxford area with her family, mostly living with her mother’s parents Jack and Pearl Cain. During the last year of WWII, they all moved to Mobile, Alabama where both her father and Granddad Jack were able to get jobs in war time industries. As soon as the war was over, they all returned to the Sardis area in northern Mississippi. Around 1950, Beverly’s family and grandparents moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
Once the family moved to Memphis, they found themselves in dire straits and Beverly had to quit school, at the beginning of the ninth grade, and go to work to help support the family. She first worked at a little nearby grocery store but was eventually able to get a job in one of the major grocery chain stores and moved up to be the head checker, even while underage. She then got a job at Kimberly-Clark Company, in Memphis, as an inspector on a product production line. Beverly loved to tell stories of her growing up years in Mississippi and in Memphis.
Beverly met her future husband, Jim Buchanan, in the summer of 1957. He was a Marine stationed at the nearby Millington Naval Station awaiting discharge after a tour of duty in the Far East. They were married in December of 1957 and relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee where Jim had enrolled in electrical engineering at the University of Tennessee. Beverly soon joined him at UT, majoring in Micro Biology. She was able to pass the entrance exam without any high school education and enroll in a major that required taking very difficult classes. She was in her third year when Jim graduated and they moved to nearby Blount County Tennessee, where Jim had taken a job with ALCOA. After a couple of years Jim was transferred to an ALCOA plant in Cleveland, Ohio and they resided in Parma Heights. A couple of years later, Jim went to work for Westinghouse Aerospace in Linthicum, Maryland and they resided in Bowie, Maryland from 1966 until 1990, where they raised their 3 children, then moving to the Indian Landing community in Anne Arundel County Maryland.
Once the children were in high school, Beverly started going to Prince George’s Community College and received an AA degree in accounting. She then went to work for the State of Maryland; first in Child Support at Upper Marlboro, then the Archives in Annapolis, then State Payroll in Annapolis and then State Income Tax in Annapolis, from which she retired from in 1999.
Beverly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and a person of abiding faith. She had many hobbies and interests including painting, reading, enjoying music of all genres, and following and investing in the stock market. Bev was renowned for her outstanding southern style cooking and her lush and productive vegetable and flower gardens. Bev and Jim enjoyed many years together and as a family, going on day trips to the Chesapeake Bay Ranch Club, sailing the Chesapeake Bay area, vacations at Bethany Beach, relaxing at the Indian Landing boat club, and traveling the world.
Beverly is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jim Buchanan, and their three children - Brent Buchanan, of Colorado, Carol Golden (Kevin) of Fairfax, Virginia and Bert Buchanan of Hurricane, West Virginia. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Grant, Connor and Jack Golden and sisters Dianne Hunter (Roger) and Deborah Cochran (Glen) and brother David Robertson (Grace) and many nieces and nephews.
A service for family and friends will be held at a later date.
