Obituary

Barbara R. Carpenter, age 89, of Maryville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at home. "Bobbie" was a lovingly dedicated member of her community, family, and church. In 1956, she and her husband, Jack, established a farm near Wildwood and built their home with the help of her father, uncles and brother. That same year, she began her career at Maryville’s First Federal Savings and Loan as a stenographer and teller, eventually rising to the position of First Vice President as a home loan officer. A lifelong member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Bobbie contributed to its growth through teaching, organization, and financial leadership. She also volunteered her time with the United Way, Red Cross, and Habitat for Humanity. After retirement, she remained busier than ever. When she wasn’t helping family or volunteering, you could find her walking in the woods, visiting beloved Edisto, or attending a live music performance, most likely Marshal Andy’s.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Eunice Riden, and her husband, Jack Carpenter. Survived by brother Bill Riden and sister Marilyn Smith; sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Shirley Carpenter, Scott Carpenter and Peg Hambright; daughters, Janet Luttrell, Kae Carpenter; grandchildren, Brad Luttrell and Monique, Jason Luttrell and Amanda, Johna Johnson and Casey, Hunter Todd and Krystin; great-grandchildren, Chloe Noonan, Cara Bailey, Kenneth Bailey, Jr., Emma Luttrell, Lila Todd, and Willa Todd; several nieces and nephews; and, her lifelong friend Lillian Lonas.

A private funeral will be held, followed by interment at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross in Maryville at 300 E Church Ave, Maryville, TN 37804. Condolences may be shared at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000, www.SmithFuneralandCremation.com.
