Julia Alice Lundy

Julia Alice Hammer Lundy, 95 of Maryville died in her sleep Thursday morning, January 11, 2018 after a long and full life. Julia (Judy) was born in Dandridge, TN into the family of a United Methodist minister and grew up in several locations of the Holston Conference in Tennessee and Virginia. She was called to serve and make a home in many places during her life. She was a graduate of Emory & Henry College, and afterward she taught French, English and music in public schools. She then became the director of youth ministry in Bristol, TN; there she met and married John T. Lundy in 1948. They committed their lives to the United Methodist Church and began their thirteen years of service as lay missionaries in the Philippines and Singapore. After their return in 1967, Judy became Director of Christian Education at Munsey UMC in Johnson City, TN. She then was on staff as administrative assistant to Bishop Mel Talbert in Nashville, TN. Following her retirement she lived in Chattanooga before moving to Maryville. Throughout her life she had a strong interest in teaching both youth and adults. She also had a great appreciation for music and enjoyed playing the piano. She was a loving and caring mother, a role model for her children. She found joy in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family will always treasure her presence in their lives, and memories of her goodness, graciousness and strong spirit will endure. She was preceded in death by her parents, The Reverend John Willie and Myrtle Jones Hammer, her brother David Hammer and in 1995 by her husband, John T. Lundy. Survivors include her children Tom Lundy (Cindy) of Hickory, NC; Rebekah Emmerson (Bert) of Maryville; and Mark Lundy (Sheila) of Johnson City; and her sister, Helen Jenkins of Cary, NC. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren are Thackston (Christy) Lundy, Ryerson and Bernet of Chicago, IL; Abigail Rybnicek (Jan), and Eliza of Washington, DC; Drs. Bryan (Lindsay) Emmerson and Colin, Robin, Logan and Soren of Santa Barbara, CA; Lara Lundy of Knoxville and Ryan (Caitlin) Reynolds of Johnson City. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Asbury Place Health Center and Caris Healthcare for the loving attention given to their mother. A celebration of life will be held at Maryville First United Methodist Church on January 27th at 11:00 am. Family will receive friends from 10-11 am. Interment next to her husband will be at Seahorn Chapel United Methodist Church in Dandridge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UMCOR—United Methodist Committee on Relief, (P.O.
