Henry David Law

September 16, 1930 — January 2, 2019

On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, Henry David Law, loving husband and father of five children, passed away at the age of 88. Henry was born on September 16, 1930, in Maryville, Tennessee, to James Paul Law and Ada Pearl McMahan Law. He was a 1949 graduate of Alcoa High School and served his country in the Tennessee National Guard and the United States Army. On February 10, 1951, he married Shirley Patricia Mason. Together, they raised three sons, John, Paul and David, and two daughters, Melinda and Amy. Henry loved and was deeply loved by his family and friends. He started Law's Furniture with his father in 1945. He built Law's into one of the finest furniture stores in the nation. Law's, located on Washington Street in Maryville, included one of the first Baker Furniture line galleries. Henry renovated multiple Law's adjoining buildings to form their furniture showroom, warehouse and office space in and next the old Southern Railroad Depot (which was later registered on the National Historic Register). After retiring in 1992, he started an Indonesian furniture import business, obtained his contractor's license, and built custom residential homes, commercial office renovation, and volunteered his time to complete construction projects for Young Life. At the age of 85, Henry was the general contractor for new Law's Furniture Showroom in Knoxville. He was a Sunday school teacher and member of First Baptist Church of Maryville, Boy Scout leader, Member of Blount County Industrial Board, Member of Maryville College Isaac Anderson Society. He and his wife attended Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, and were members of the Emmaus Sunday School Class. They were also members of First Baptist Church Maryville. Henry was preceded in death by his father, James Paul, his mother, Ada Pearl and his sister Pauline Walters Spencer, and brother, Ralph Steward Law. He is survived by his brother, Eugene, and his wife, Shirley, their five children: John Law (Knoxville), Paul & wife Carol Law (Maryville) and David & wife Vicki Law (Maryville), Melinda & husband Dr. Tom King (Kingsport), and Amy & Judge Rex Dale (Lenoir City); six grandchildren: Amanda, Adam, Caleb, and Curtis Law, and Grant and Reed King; and one great-grandson, Carter Law. Henry's burial will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Maryville, and a Celebration of Life memorial service will follow, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Maryville with receiving of friends to follow the service.
