Charles William Driskill

March 10, 1930 — December 1, 2018

Charles William “Bill” Driskill of Maryville died December 1, 2018 at the age of 88. He moved from the Wheat Community of Roane County to Clinton when he was in the 6th grade. He graduated from Clinton High School where he was a star athlete, and his jersey numbers were retired in both basketball and football. A scholarship student, he graduated from Tennessee Tech University and earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During the Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army. After teaching one year at Everett High School, he accepted a job at Clinton High School where he worked as teacher and coach for six years and six years as assistant principal. He served 22 years as principal of Maryville High School and four years as a supervisor in Maryville City Schools. He worked two years as an evaluator in Tennessee’s Better Schools Program in Nashville. He was a devoted member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at Maryville First Baptist Church and Clinton First Baptist Church. He held many offices in the Knox Area Principals Association and was in demand as an evaluator of other school systems. He volunteered with Boy Scouts and United Way. In 1992, he was presented the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame Award for his work in school administration. In 2004 he was named to the Clinton High School’s first Wall of Fame. In 2006 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Maryville City Schools foundation. He enjoyed hiking, golf, fishing, picnicing in Cades Cove and working in his yard. He treasured beach vacations with his children and grandchildren and traveled extensively with friends. Preceded in death by: Son, David L. Driskill; Mother, Ella Driskill; Father, Charles A. Driskill; Siblings, Dorothy D. Conn, Helen Driskill, Catherine D. Smith, and James Driskill. He is survived by: Wife of 65 years, Joyce Cox Driskill; Daughter & Son-in-law, Carol & Paul Law of Maryville; Grandsons, Caleb and Curtis Law; Daughter-in-law, Donna Driskill of Dallas, Georgia. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Smith Trinity Chapel with Rev. Charles Ballard officiating. Family will receive friends following the service.
